In the 1st week of Feburary, 09' I was approached by Redbull NZ with an idea about a cafe that they had gain control of in the Auckland University Campus, New Zealand. They needed a creative mind to come up with the ideas and solutions to design, paint, build, and create an old cafe into...A HANGAR (because "Redbull gives you wings"). Something new, amazing, and realistic were the project outlines.
Challenge: I had 28 days to transform a small, dingy, darkblue with orange lino basement cafe into a realistic looking aeroplane hanger with everything a cafe needs plus more. Instantly I knew this would be no easy feit when most family garages had more room and I could touch the ceiling with my hands. Realistic painting techniques and optical illusions seemed to be what was needed. I was given full creative control and a big budget, and incharge of the painters, builders, and electricians. Not having any interior design experience made this a MASSIVE task but who am I to let that get in the way of this opportunity. Believe me, it was a HUGE learning experience.
I soon found out that 28 days is shit all! It soon became 18 hour days with a total of 8 Allnighters. I ended up bringing a mattress into the cafe so I could paint until 4am then get a bit of sleep just to wake up and do it all over again. Thankyou Redbull for the very nessassary energy drinks to help me achieve this!!! All and all it was alot of fun and both Redbull NZ and I were very happy with the finished product.
Please enjoy these photos from the nothingness it was to the finished cafe it now is...
